Doug Berlie - How to choose and oil filter - Doug Berlie
How do you know which oil filter is right for your vehicle?

Engine oil filters are an essential engine component in any vehicle with an internal combustion engine (ICE), and are responsible for keeping the engine clean. Without a proper oil filter, dirt, debris, and other contaminants can cause serious or even catastrophic engine damage.

Most oil filters contain a pleated paper element used to capture contaminants and particles that can damage your engine. It's important to keep in mind the type of oil your vehicle uses. Different types of oil require different types of filters, so it’s important to pick the right one for your vehicle. Remember to also look at the size of the filter, as some engines require larger filters.

It’s important to follow the vehicle manufacturer’s instructions when changing your oil filter. Most oil filters should be changed every 3,000 to 5,000 miles, depending on the type of oil you’re using. It’s always best to replace the oil filter when you change the oil to keep the engine free of sludge build up.

When choosing an oil filter, it is important to look for quality filters that can filter to at least 25 microns with a base and body that won’t leak or explode. There are many different aftermarket brands of oil filters on the market today to choose from, but it’s best to stick with the one from your vehicle’s manufacturer. You can also use one from the OEM supplier that makes them for the manufacturer. For instance, if you have a Chevrolet, you can use a Delco® filter made by GM, or a Motorcraft® filter for a Ford vehicle.

The image below shows 3 oil filters for a Jaguar 4.0 litre V8. Note the Mann® filter's extra size. Mann® is the OEM supplier for oil filters to Jaguar Land Rover (JLR). While the EcoGuard® and Bosch® filters may physically fit, they have reduced volume capacity due to their size.

While all 3 filters have an 'anti-drain back' valve visible through the inlet holes, note the larger size of the inlet holes on the Mann® filter compared to the other two. More oil in allows more oil out to your engine.

Remember, engine oil filters are an essential component of any ICE vehicle, and should be changed regularly to keep your engine operating at peak efficiency. It’s important to select the right oil filter for your vehicle, as different types of oil require different types of filters. It’s also important to change the oil filter at the same time as the oil so your engine remains clean allowing oil to reach all critical engine areas needing lubrication.
